RURAL COMMUNITIES

A constant commitment to improving living conditions

The town of Ayamé is located at the center of a vast rural area (over 100,000 inhabitants), characterized by villages of a few thousand people and small settlements (Campements) of a few farming families. These locations rely on the Ayamé Hospital for their healthcare needs.

The rural area is served by dispensaries, generally staffed by a nurse and a midwife.

The Bilekro School

The Agency has dedicated many resources to improving the living conditions of these impoverished rural populations, largely made up of immigrants from neighboring Francophone countries: Burkina Faso, Mali, Togo, and Benin.

The first initiatives date back to 2007 with the dispensary in the village of Diakité Dogu, followed by the Bianouan hospital in 2008, and finally, in 2010, thanks to significant co-financing from the Italo Monzino Foundation in Milan, the “Antenne dell’HGA” project took shape. This project aimed to establish an efficient network of rural healthcare centers serving the area covered by the Ayamé General Hospital.

The dispensaries in Songan, Apouasso, Yaou, and Kétesso were renovated in record time. Construction began on those in Diby, Ebikro, and Koukourandoumi. Such results were, once again, the outcome of the technical and design efforts of the “engineers’ group” from the Pavia Engineers Association.

The Maternity of Baffia

The construction and renovation of dispensaries and schools continued in the following years with the dispensaries in Bilekro, Toliesso (2016), and Baffia (2020), even during the height of the COVID pandemic. In some of these “almost adopted” villages, schools were also built, wells for drinking water were dug, and solar power systems were installed for electricity. Support for the villages in the “brousse” remains an important commitment for APPA due to the level of poverty among these inhabitants.
