POUPONNIERE
THE CHILDREN’S “PARTICIPATORY SUPPORT”
In Côte d’Ivoire, a very high percentage of adults are HIV-positive. Mother-to-child transmission of the HIV virus is very common; however, effective treatments now exist that allow for the complete recovery of children. The Ayamé General Hospital, with the support of the Agency, participates in the national STOP-SIDA program for the prevention and treatment of AIDS in the target area.
The idea of creating a Pouponnière to host newborns in need of treatment (many of whom have become orphans) was realized in 2001.
Thanks to the collaboration of the Order of Engineers of Pavia, a first building was constructed inside the hospital, capable of accommodating approximately 25 children.
However, the facility soon proved to be insufficient, even from an environmental point of view. Thus, in 2006, thanks to the decisive contribution of the Agency and the NGO ABCS (Associazione Bertoni Cooperazione e Sviluppo) from Verona, a new Pouponnière was built outside the hospital grounds, in a more valuable and healthier area compared to the previous location. It was inaugurated on February 17, 2007.
The Pouponnière, designed by the Engineers of Pavia, consists of numerous and spacious rooms and internal services built according to very high standards, while also respecting the traditional African way of life. Its capacity increased from 25 to 60 children; however, if necessary, a few additional places can be added without creating major difficulties in cohabitation.
To support the children hosted at the Pouponnière, a minimum contribution of 300 euros per year for a period of 2–3 years is sufficient. Afterwards, it is possible to continue helping the children in their school and life paths… outside the Pouponnière. The Agency’s goal is their full reintegration into the family and social environment from which they come.
Subscribers will periodically receive updates on the progress of the initiative.
It is also possible to support the Pouponnière by organizing solidarity events.
